Last weekend, we went to the picturesque village of Vizzini to see the Sagra della Ricotta e del Formaggio, or Ricotta and Cheese Festival. The view of the countryside from the village park was good for my soul! The views down the alleys and the beautiful old buildings are just what you imagine a tiny village in Italy should look like. | |
There were tons of people out enjoying the perfect weather. People watching and trying our limited Italian was almost as much fun as sampling all of the cheeses.
We were in Vizzini on Liberation Day, the Italian holiday celebrating the end of World War II. It was nice to see the wreath on the war memorial in the midst of all the festivities. For 3,000 years, Sicily has been fought over in one war after another. Taking a moment to view this tiny town's long list of fallen from WW I and II reminded me that I need to do more research about the history of this island, so that I can appreciate the history of the places we visit.
